WENGER FAILS AGAIN IN THE UCL

Arsene Wenger has almost failed to help the team past the Round of 16 stage, yet again.

Arsenal were demolished 5-1 by German champions Bayern Munich in the first leg of the clash on Wednesday. This sets them on the brink of a knockout from the continental tournament.

Wenger’s men would need more than a miracle to upturn such a feat when they host the German machines at the Emirates. Many have written the Gunners off. This is one of the numerous times Wenger has failed to take the team beyond this stage.

In 2011 Arsenal won the first leg of their clash with Barcelona. At the return leg at Nou Camp, Lionel Messi lifted the team to a 3-1 victory after Arsenal lost Robin van Persie controversially.

The next year AC Milan stopped Arsenal. The Serie A giants defeated Arsenal 4-0 courtesy of a brace from Brazilian playmaker Robinho, and efforts from Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Kevin Boateng. At the Emirates, Arsenal won 3-0 with goals from Laurent Koscielny, Tomas Rosicky and van Persie.

In 2013, Bayern Munich thrashed Arsenal at the same stage. Lukas Podolski goal did not count for much as Bayern won 3-1 in England. Olivier Giroud and Koscielny made in 2-0 in Germany but Bayern went ahead based on away goals.

Arsenal lost the last eight spot to Bayern again in 2014. In a dramatic first leg Toni Kroos and Thomas Muller scored each to make it 2-0 while Mesut Ozil missed a spot kick from 12 yards and goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny was sent off. The aggregate was 3-1 following a 1-1 in Germany.

In 2015, Arsenal lost to Monaco. They played 3-1 at the Emirates but won 2-0 at Stade Louis II. The 2016 aggregate score was 5-1. Messi had a brace in the 2-0 win in London while Luis Suarez and Neymar joined him in the second leg with Mohammed Elneny scoring his first Arsenal goal.

In 2017, it seems the race is yet over for Wenger and his boys.
